Become a Frontex Border Guard - We are recruiting!
For the first time, the European Union will have its own uniformed service – the European Border and Coast Guard standing corps. This new border corps, composed of Frontex and EU Member States’ officers, will at any time be able to support the Member States facing challenges at their external borders.

Trained by the best and equipped with the latest that technology has to offer, Frontex border and coast guards will be ready for tomorrow’s challenges at the borders, helping to ensure their proper functioning.

Frontex border guards will work under the command of the national authorities of the country they are deployed in.

Frontex border guards will support EU and Schengen countries in tasks such as:

border control at land, sea and air borders
border surveillance
collecting and sharing information on situation at EU’s borders and beyond
search and rescue activities
returning people who do not have the right to stay in the EU
fighting cross-border crime, including migrant smuggling, document fraud and terrorism.
Frontex border guards will be working in operational areas at EU’s external borders. The officers may also work in non-EU country, provided it signed a Status Agreement with the EU.

Frontex border guards will wear uniforms, carry a service weapon and will have executive powers. This means that the officers will be able to perform tasks such as verifying a person’s identity and nationality, allowing or refusing entry into the EU, patrolling between border crossing points.

All the positions offered for recruitment will be divided into basic, intermediate and advanced levels, depending on the candidates’ professional experience and skills. As a Frontex border guard, you will have a specified function, such as border guard officer, document expert and cross-border crime detection officer.

The deadline for the submission of applications is 16 December 2019.

Each of the selected candidates will receive basic training of up to six months in order to be ready for deployment in operational areas in January 2021. It will ensure that the officers have the necessary skills to work together in any particular operational area, fully complying with the applicable EU law and ethical standards.

After the basic training, the possibility to enter specialised training, taking into account the previous experience, will be offered to Frontex border guards throughout their career.

WHO are we looking for
We seek applicants with experience in the law enforcement field (such as police, customs, border and coast guard), emergency services, civilian crisis management, military or equivalent (active and retired).

In the first phase, Frontex is looking to recruit more than 700 officers.

WHAT level of education do I need to apply
There are different educational requirements for each of the three levels.

For the basic level, you need to have diploma for completing university or equivalent studies of at least three years or professional training of an equivalent level.

For the intermediate level, you need to possess a level of post-secondary education attested by a diploma or a level of secondary education attested by a diploma giving access to post-secondary education, and appropriate professional experience of at least three years.

For the advanced level, you need to have a diploma for completing university or equivalent studies when the normal period of university education is four years or more or a diploma for completing university studies and appropriate professional experience of at least one year when the normal period of university education is at least three years or professional training of an equivalent level.

For more details, please see the applicable selection notice.
WHERE will Frontex border guards work
Frontex border guards will be deployed mainly at EU/Schengen external borders. The officers may also be deployed in countries outside of the European Union that have signed a Status Agreement with the European Commission.

Recruitment process
